“Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces … gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand …” - Isaiah 8:9, 10.

Every effort to solve the problems of the world without taking the word of God into account will come to nought. They should avoid setting lofty goals for things which only God can do. For instance, the 193 member-states of the United Nations as well as global civil society groups gathered in New York on September 25, 2015, and adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by which they hoped that by 2030 they would “end poverty, end hunger, ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, ensure prosperity for all”. These are certainly aims that man cannot achieve.

It is to make us know the futility of human efforts without God that He inspired Isaiah the Prophet to declare that coalitions, alliances and groupings whose purposes are contrary to the divine order would come to nought. We should always seek to know the will of God so as to guide our steps aright by His grace. God used the Psalmist to state, “Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation. I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.” (Psalm 85:7, 8) And Isaiah the Prophet declared: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:” -  Isaiah 26:3, 4.
