Text:“And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.” - 2 Samuel 6:6.
Orderliness in the service of God means that His worshippers should not be presumptuous by not doing things that are above them, even if they meant well. When David was moving the ark , it was put in a new cart to convey it. (2 Samuel 6:3) But this was contrary to the law which expressly stated that the ark should staves should be put in the rings by the sides of the ark so that it could be borne on the shoulders by the Levites. (Exodus 25:12-16) As the ark was being conveyed on the cart, it stumbled and, fearing that it would fall, Uzzah touched it and was struck dead immediately. The offence was that though Uzzah was a Levite, he was not authorized to touch the ark. - Numbers 4:15.
Though David was displeased, there was nothing he could do about it. But Obed-edom who volunteered to keep the ark in his house was blessed abundantly in only three months because he followed the order in regard to the ark. King David and the Levites thereafter followed the proper procedure when they conveyed the ark to Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 6:8-12; 1 Chronicles 15:13-15) We should mark the words of Apostle Paul that though the natural Jews had the zeal for God, they were not offering acceptable service to Him because they lacked the true knowledge to enable them do things in the way they would be acceptable to God.. – Romans 10:1-3.
