Text:

“And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you. And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.” - 2 Chronicles 24:20, 21.

Comment:

After Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, had killed all the seed royal of the house of Judah and made herself queen, God used Jehoshabeath, (Jehosheba 2 Kings 11:1-3), the daughter of the king, and wife of Jehoiada the priest, to hide Joash, the king's son, then an infant, for six years until Jehoiada the high priest had Joash installed as king in the temple while Athaliah was put to death. - 2 Chronicles 22:10-12; 2 Chronicles 23:1-15.

However after the death of Jehoiada, the young king listened to ungodly counsel and turned to idolatry. (2 Chronicles 24:18, 19) Even when Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest chastised him, he did not repent. Rather, he organized people to stone the priest of God to death.  (2 Chronicles 24:20, 21)  The Bible record states that “Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son”, adding “And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.” (2 Chronicles 24:22) It is remarkable that Zechariah the priest corrected the king without caring for his life.  “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” - Matthew 16:25.

At the end of the year, a relatively small army of the Syrians came up against Joash, killed all the princes, looted the city and departed. The servants of Joash the king later slew him. - 2 Chronicles 24:23-25.
