TEXT : “What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.”- Matthew 19:4-6.

COMMENT: Cases of divorce, separation or “putting away” among married people in the world today is uncountable and keeps increasing; while many other marriages that are still intact are not happy ones. Many want to divorce their spouses because of one problem or the other, but the Almighty God does not allow divorce as a way to settle problems. (Malachi 2:15, 16) The relationship between husband and wife must be kept inviolate. They must not allow external influences or unnecessary interferences from parents, relatives or friends to disrupt their home. The saying that “they shall be one flesh” is but an emphasis signifying the strong relationship that must exist between HUSBAND AND WIFE and which must be maintained as stated by our Lord, Jesus Christ as is the text for today. Moreover, the Almighty God said through St. Paul. “Let not the wife depart from her husband: but and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.” - 1 Corinthians 7:10,11.

Even if the partners do not share the same religious faith, the true Christian among them is encouraged to stay put and not to consider separation as the necessary way out of his/her problems. Such is advised to show good Christian conduct that may win over the unbelieving partner (1 Peter 3:12, 1 Corinthians 7:10-16). Without doubt, the true Christian will be blessed abundantly by God for his/her patience by His grace.
