TEXT : “So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son.”- Ruth 4: 13.

COMMENT: That the Almighty God who instituted marriage also gives the fruit of the womb as shown in the text for today. ¬†Declarations by men of God in time of old attest to this. For instance, when Jacob arrived Egypt, he asked to know who Ephraim and Manasseh were. Joseph said that they are “The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.” - Genesis 33:5.

The charge given to Adam and Eve by the Almighty God and which was repeated to Noah’s family after the flood, include the instruction: “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth”. (Genesis 1:27, 28; 9:1,7) Though childlessness, after several years of marriage is a serious challenge, it should not be allowed to generate conflict in the marriage union. Childlessness should not give cause for such bitterness of heart and desperation that could lead to the weakness or loss of faith in God which amounts to succumbing to the devil’s ultimate aim. Being a trying moment, husbands in childless marriages should work hard to support their wives in order to lighten the burden. The wife on her part should not abandon her husband for another man in the quest for a child.  They should aim at achieving other objectives of marriage which includes companionship and mutual support for one another. Both should seek for help and look to God with unshaken faith. The Psalmist declared: “He (God) maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children.”- Psalm 113:9.
