TEXT : “I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.” 1 Timothy 5:14
COMMENT: That some women do not want to marry and when they do, have no time for their children, has been cited as the cause of many social problems today. Some consider marriage as obsolete, and in their opinion, think it unwise to get themselves tied in matrimony to a spouse and shoulder the responsibilities marriage imposes on one. They prefer a life of immorality to that of honourable marriage. Women of this sort stand condemmed and are in danger of God’s punishment unless they repent thoroughly. - 1 Timothy 1:9,10; Romans 1:28-32.
Apart from behaving contrary to the divine arrangement, St. Paul stated that deliberate refusal by some women to get married exposes them to vices such as idleness and gossip, hence he gave the advice in today’s text. Marriage in its true perspective enhances the prestige and dignity of both the man and woman. And St. Paul stated: “Marriage is honourable; Let us all keep it so, and the marriage-bond involate; for God’s judgment will fall on fornicators and adulterers.”- Hebrews 13:4 New English Bible
Unbelievers could even be won to the faith by the godly conduct of the wife. (1 Peter 3:1-6) St. Paul directed his spiritual son, Timothy to charge the elderly women to “teach the younger women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word by God be not blasphemed.”- Titus 2:4,5.
