TEXT : “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” - Ephesians 6:12.
COMMENT: St. Paul in his letter to the Christians at Ephesus gave, as it were, this graphic description of the mighty odds which the Christian has to contend with. Ranged against the believers are the instruments of satan the devil, demons with varying levels of authority and power. These spirit creatures use human beings to carry out wicked practices which are so unnatural, so brutal and so base that it should be clear to the discerning mind that they such persons are not of themselves. These forces are responsible for false religions, secret societies and cults, witchcraft, suicides, murders, oppression, injustice and many other ungodly practices. Not only do these creatures teach or propagate debased and ungodly philosophies, they use politics, religion and commerce to try to sway even those who are righteously inclined from the way of God. In the words of Scripture these natural “brute beasts” will never change. See also Psalm 58:3; 2 Peter 2:12.
From the words of Apostle Paul in the text for today, Christians should not see those who are carnally minded and wicked as their enemies, they should have the understanding that these people have been misled by satan the devil. They should continue to do righteousness and to pray for them to be freed from the captivity of satan the devil as our Lord Jesus Christ enjoins us in Matthew 5:43-45. See also 2 Timothy 2:24-26.
