Text:

“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” - Matthew 4:1-3

Comment:

After the baptism by John the Baptist, the Lord Jesus Christ was led by the spirit of God into the wilderness where after forty days and night in which he stayed without food, the devil came to tempt him in various ways.  Evidently, one could see that the devil could cite the Scriptures to mislead the people of God.  However, Jesus Christ countered the devil with the word of God. “…his truth shall be thy shield and buckler”. (Psalm 91:4)   Evidently, the desire of the devil is for people to worship him.  So, he uses food, material things, signs and wonders to strive to deceive those who are spiritually weak. The fact is that every believer must go through a fiery trial at the instance of the devil but by the grace of God with faith, knowledge and understanding he would be able to resist the devil and then he would flee from him. The Bible says: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” - James 4:7.
