Text:“For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.” - Deuteronomy 15:11.
Since the resources God has provided for all mankind are unequally distributed due to the devil's influence, God Almighty made the law right from time of old that, those who are better off economically should not hesitate to assist the poor. This should be a way of life because those who are rich today could be poor tomorrow. Or that could be the fate of their later generations. Majority of Africa's estimated 800 million people are ravaged by disease, poverty, and conflicts. Here in Nigeria, the hard socio-economic conditions the masses are grappling with is illustrated by the case of patients who had been detained in hospitals because they could not pay their bills. Those endowed with material means in the early church showed example by sharing their resources with the poor and this made the Church to be strong. “Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.” (Acts 4:34, 35) When Agabus, the prophet was inspired to reveal that there would be famine in the then known world, the disciples, every man according to his ability, sent relief unto the brethren in Judaea. - Acts 11:28-30.
