Text:“For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.” – James 3:2.
What Apostle James is saying is that if one can control his tongue then he should be able to control his bodily passions. He stated: “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.” (James 3:8,9). Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke further on the danger of using the tongue wrongfully when he said: “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” (Matthew 12:36, 37) We should even be more careful with the words we speak to others when we are angry.
The Bible says: “…let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” (Ephesians 4:26-29). We should not say things about others which we ourselves would not like to be said about us. We should also try to think before we speak, so as not to make damaging statements, false accusations and tell lies against our neighbours. We as true worshippers of God should always say the truth at all times. – Zechariah 8:16; Colossians 3:9.
