Text: :“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” - Joshua 1:8
Comment: The level of worldliness in the world today is so high that a lot of people believe that prosperity and success come only from having power, influential personal contacts, and a relentless desire to get ahead. But the recipe for gaining prosperity that God taught Joshua the prophet is that good success will come from being strong and courageous because we need to be bold to speak the truth, to practice it and to defend it, “…in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world”. (Philippians2:15) We should be constantly reading and studying the Holy writ and obediently practising it by God's grace. These requirements will enable one to make progress both spiritually and materially by the grace of God.
With a lot of people struggling to climb up the ladder so as to control others, it sounds odd to tie success to obedience. Yes, genuine success comes from being controlled by God. When we are not certain what to do, obedience to what God has revealed in the Scriptures is the only sure step to take. We should resolve to set aside time each day to read and think about God's Word. Remind ourselves of God's words day and night. Then endeavour to obey His words then we shall prosper by His grace. “If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.” – Job 36:11.
