Text: : "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth." - Luke 21:34, 35.
Comment: Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, has in the foregoing texts graciously given his sheep (the children of God), the SIGNS which those with hearing ears and seeing eyes in this age should take warning from so as to guard against evil doings and be free from the danger of God's vengeance by which He will soon clear the earth of all vestiges of wickedness or evil. (Proverbs 20:12) But the pity of it is that countless numbers of people in our generation are so given to sensuality or worldliness that they have no time to read the Holy Bible as to understand the signs of the times in order to avail themselves of the opportunity afforded the sheep of God to escape imminent death or destruction. One of the vices that make people to be spiritually careless is drunkenness. The Bible says, “Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them! …but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands. Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.” - Isaiah 5:11-13.
The warning of Jesus Christ against surfeiting (excessive eating and drinking), and worldly worries or cares should be taken very seriously by the faithful so as not to indulge in sinful pleasures as the ungodly do. See - 1 John 2:15-17.
