Text:: “That which is gone out of thy lips thou shall keep and perform; even a freewill offering, according as thou vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou has promised with thy mouth.'' – Deuteronomy 23:23.
Comment: Vows are promises we make in our prayers to God. The Bible tells us that God hears prayers and unto him shall vows performed. The Psalmist said “Praise waiteth for thee, O God in Sion; and unto thee shall the vow be performed. O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.'' (Psalm 65:1 , 2) In this regard, we make prayers to God, and God answers our prayers, we should not fail to offer the vows we made to God. Eliphaz the Temanite said “Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.'' (Job 22:27) Therefore, whatever we have purposed in our hearts to offer (especially as vows to God), we should give and God will surely bless us.
While St. Paul travelled to Syria, with Priscilla and Aquila, the Bible says he shaved his head at Cenchrae “for he had a vow”. (Acts 18:18) When Paul returned to Jerusalem, he was told to join four believers and perform the formalities required for purification in fulfillment of their vows. St Paul admonished “Every man according as he purposed in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you: that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.'' – 2 Corinthians 9:7, 8.
